GARAGE MAHAL HOME aka GMH
162a Samson Street, White Gum Valley 6162 (access from Lois Lane)
There was a need for me to build a cost-effective dwelling. There were many choices but I chose shed construction.
The reasons being cost effectiveness, fast construction, low maintenance with an industrial design aesthetic.
I was able to have the shed construction company build a frame with cladding, glazing and concrete ground floor and the fitout remained with me to complete which I have done over the last four years including several revisions after I decided to move from upstairs to downstairs and back again.
The house is a simple, rectangular, north facing monopitch based on 50s modernist design.
I had to have passive solar design: cross ventilation for good summer cooling, north facing glazing for winter solar heating.
To assist with summer cooling of this lightweight construction I have installed a 2-storey green wall on the north and west sides – 120 sqm – set back 1 metre form the building and now covered in deciduous Virginia Creeper.
The Virginia Creeper and other surrounding vegetation and vegetable garden is irrigated by subsurface greywater from the numerous indoor and outdoor bathrooms for the six occupants.
