This retrofit house has the basics all wrong; north south orientation, large brick veneer extension with large windows facing east, northern windows shaded year round by a verandah, old section used to be draughty and uninsulated.
However we have added ceiling insulation, draught stoppers, pelmets, some plastic film double glazing, innovative low-cost door closers and blocked most vent holes.
We use seasonal changes: in summer extensive shade cloth outside above the eastern wall and windows and a west facing window. In winter we block the evaporative cooler ducts with squares of cardboard as well as the rooftop shutters.
We recently replaced the fridge with an energy efficient model. Electricity consumption is now around 6 KWhrs/day.
We have added a 1.5 KW grid interactive PV system which balances the consumption at least in summer. We wear plenty of woollen clothes in winter, sarongs & cotton in summer.
