The Smart Home is a joint project between Ausgrid and Sydney Water show casing the best in innovative and energy efficient houshold technology.
The Smart Home family have been living in the Smart Home for over a year, road testing new technologies and sharing their experiences on their blog http://www.smarthomefamily.com.au/
The home generates and stores its electricity via a solar pergola, rooftop solar panels, a ceramic fuel cell which converts gas into electricity. The power generated by the solar and gas fuel cell is stored in a battery storageunit, which export pwoer back to the home in peak times.
Recycled materials have been used throughout the home wherever possible, from recycled ubber flooring in the kitchen to the coffeee table in the lounge room partically made from electricity insulators. Sustainable features include a waterless garden of Australian natives and a patio of recycled stone.
The homes uses recycled water in the toilets and washing machine and the 5 star tapware, low-flow showerheads.
The electricity use of the homes 20 water and energy saving efficient appliances can be switched on and off remotely through a home control system. This and other devices, such as multiple water meters, allow the household greater visibility over electricity and water use.
