“Winona”
Our house demonstrates what can be achieved when renovating a 1914 federation style bungalow using solar passive design principles. We reused original and second hand materials where-ever possible. The house was redesigned for functionality & minimal energy use, using low maintenance materials.
3.5 star NatHERS rating after extension (1.5 star before).
Retrofit: Retrofit and addition of north-facing 2nd storey by architect, Jamie Brennan.
Climate Zone: Eastern Sydney – BCA Climate Zone 5, Nathers Climate Zone 56.
Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this home
Water Harvesting Systems
Rainwater tanks with a capacity of 26,000 litres used for all needs. Grey water reed bed used for irrigation of orchard. Mains operated water pumps are used. Use is made of HDPE (non-PVC) storm water piping.
External Walls
Original part of house is double brick, while the upstairs addition uses hebel brick.
Internal Walls
Original downstairs: single brick. Upstairs: plasterboard.
Roof
Original rafters & roof tiles were cleaned, treated and reused for 2nd storey addition. The roof pitch is 32 degrees (reduced from original 35 degrees to please neighbours).
Floor
Upstairs and Renovation: Recycled 2nd hand suspended wood floor.
Window Treatments
Second hand windows, doors and re-used original lined curtains.
Solar or Wind Power Generation
1.5 kW Grid connected system.
Heating & Cooling
Gas heater, rarely used (Sydney’s coastal climate is not extreme. Through draughts utilised in summer, while warmer clothes are worn in winter).
Water Heating
Solahart solar hot water system.
Appliances
Energy/water efficient washing machine, fridge, gas cooker
Other Unique Features
Dry composting toilets (up and downstairs), Permaculture garden.
