Sustainable House Day, Fairlight 1, NSW

This 1920’s house has been retrofitted to be self-sufficient in water needs and grey and black water sewerage disposal. A grid connected Photovoltaic system is also installed.

New or Retrofit:   Retrofit by architect, Ian Shields Brown.

Climate Zone: Eastern Sydney – BCA Climate Zone 5, Nathers Climate Zone 56.

Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this home

Water Harvesting Systems No Sydney Water is used. Rain water is collected from the roof into two corrugated metal tanks holding 17,000 litres and fitted with a first flush diverter. The rain water is then used for drinking, kitchen use and showering. All waste from the bathroom, laundry and kitchen is treated by the “Aqua Clarus Super Natural” waste management system located under the rear deck, which recycles clean water back through the toilets and washing machine.   The water is also used in the garden.  

External Walls   Double Brick  

Internal Walls   Single brick rendered with plaster finish  

Roof Sarked timber framed hipped roof with orange concrete tiles and gables to front elevation. Ceiling exposed framing & fibrous plaster with insulation batts laid on top.

Floor Existing sandstone based walls, peered and beamed tongue & groove polished timber floor with loose rugs and carpets. Rear extension floor framing sarked and supported on brick piers.

Window Treatments Timber framed single pane casement windows with venetian blinds, curtains & timber pelmets.  

Solar or Wind Power Generation 1.8 kW solar panels located on garage roof, grid connected. Remaining green-power purchased is 100% wind generated.  

Heating & Cooling Natural gas heaters located in the original fireplaces used in winter.   Oscillating fans are used for cooling.

Water Heating “Quantum” reverse cycle Hot Water System.

Appliances All appliances are turned off at the mains when not in use.

Other Unique Features Permaculture garden with chickens which further reduces waste from the property to a bare minimum.
