Sustainable House Day 2009, Maxwell, NSW

A simple 12 sq. cosy cottage tucked away on 100 secluded acres.

Our home was built to be as light a footprint on the environment as practical using natural and recycled elements.

New or Retro: Designed and built by owners in 2002.

Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this home


Water Harvesting: 5000 gal. house tank, 3000 gal. shed tank, 20 000 gal. dam water tank for toilet and gardens.

External walls: Rammed earth (partly sourced from property), insulated timber plywood and zinc corrugated iron on timber frames.

Internal walls: Rammed earth, zinc mini-orb, plywood and some plasterboard.

Roof: Exposed cypress roof frame on cypress bush poles with zinc corrugated roof sheets

Floor: Concrete slab on ground.

Window treatments: Recycled windows and doors.

Solar or Wind generation: 2.3 kW stand alone photovoltaic system (soon adding 5 more panels and wind turbine)

Heating & Cooling: Heating – second hand wood heater using wood from the property. Cooling – ceiling fans and evaporative air-conditioner used when full sun.

Water Heating: LPG bottled gas hot water system.

Other: Vegie garden and CHOOKS – the most sustainable of pets.
