Sustainable House Day, Payneham, SA

This brand new family home incorporates many features including design for passive heating and cooling.

The C shape allows good cross ventilation in summer.  Roof and Hebel panel external walls have high degree of thermal insulation.  
Type: New residence completed in 2009.
Approx 240 sq m, 3 bedrooms and study, 2 living areas.
The house is 'C' shaped. Main bedrooms face NE and the lounge and study face NW.

Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this home

Water Harvesting
Above ground tanks, 22kl plus a 1kl header tank plumbed into house and interconnected for common water level.
Laundry water diverted under lawn in summer.

External Walls
Colour bond with air cell insulation, 30mm air space,  and R 2.5 batts, total R 4.7.
Hebel power panel (aerated concrete) with sisalation, 20mm air space and R 2.5batts, total R 4.6.

Internal Walls
Gyprock with noise control batts between walls.
Low volatile organic content paint.

Roof
Light grey Colorbond, 50mm ceiling blanket, sisalation, air gap and R 4.0 batts. Total R5.5.
Pitch 7˚ with 1m eaves NW and NE sides allow winter sun in and summer shade of windows.

Floor
Concrete slab with pale grey tiles throughout house.
Tiles absorb winter sun in NW facing living area.
Draft excluders on all external doors

Window Treatments
All windows except frosted glass in bathrooms are double glazed with aluminium frames.
Curtains with pelmets.

Solar or Wind Generation
2.4 kW amorphous silicon PV system to be installed

Heating & Cooling
The 'C' shape provides good cross ventilation to cool bedrooms and living areas.
A reverse cycle air conditioner with gold ducting (high insulation) can be used for additional cooling or heating. In June had not yet been used for heating as the passive solar design was still working well.
The house is zoned, so only occupied spaces need be cooled or heated.
Ceiling fans installed in all bedrooms and living areas.

Water Heating
Rinnai solar, gas boosted system is roof mounted and facing NW.

Appliances
Low flow shower heads and low flush toilet (4.5 and 3l)

Other
Recycled timber used in the kitchen cupboards and shelves.
