Sustainable House Day,West Hobart, Tasmania

westhobart by westhobart one(August 2009) (rank 354th)

The brief was to build a comfortable ‘rural city home’ that blended into the hillside, was energy efficient with natural lighting, plenty of water, and provided an easy living environment.

Sustainable Elements of the house:

Footprint:    The house is split level, on a Stratum title on the outskirts of Hobart city, and occupies a small footprint.  The design is 2 rectangular pavilions twisted by 10°, separated by a Jarrah wedge of front and rear decks, with internal stairs.

Water :        A 5000Litre water tank as well as mains water.

Garden:    The garden is very small with low maintenance requirements.

External Walls:    Block and concrete

Internal Walls:    Stunning pre-formed black concrete panels provide thermal mass, and contrast beautifully with the Jarrah stairs and decks.

Roof:    R5.3 insulation consisting of roof blanket and bats

Floor:    Suspended polished concrete floors in most rooms.  Other rooms carpeted/Jarrah overlay

Windows:    Double glazed, with good cross-ventilation.

Sliding Door:    2.4m Sliding Door provides a wonderful feature in that it slides externally onto the deck, providing shelter from prevailing winds and opening up the living area to the deck.

Heating:    2 small heat pumps

Solar:    Future project to install PV and Solar Hot Water

Thanks "West Hobart", do you know how many other houses will be open on Sustainable House Day?  I am involved with West Hobart Environment Network and would be happy to help publicise and/or help out on the day.

Congratulations on a beautiful home.  We hope to build in Hobart over the next 18mths. Do you mind sharing the details of your architect?

Re: Sustainable House Day,West Hobart, Tasmania

My architect  to planning approval stage was Mark Drury and Stuart Bowling from Design East did the drawings for building approval. The builder was Denis Young.

Give me a call on 03 62315192 if you want to discuss architects as it was more complicated than it should have been.

Re: Sustainable House Day,West Hobart, Tasmania

Thanks so much for that information and the offer to talk more about it.  Funnily enough we were considering using the same architect but he seems to be quite busy at the moment and hasn't got back to us.  A friend has put us in touch with a Design Draftsman who seems to have good knowledge on maximising energy efficiency of the house so we are considering this option.  Congratualtions again on a great house.  Cheers.
