Cairns & Far North Environment Centre Tropical Green Building Network

cfnqtrop by cfnqtrop one(August 2009) (rank 274th)

The Cairns and Far North Environment Centre Inc (CAFNEC) is an incorporated, community not-for profit organisation.  Operational since 1981, CAFNEC was established by concerned local and regional community members with an interest in nature conservation and environmental protection, and is one of nine regional conservation councils for Queensland.

CAFNEC engages widely with stakeholders across community and industry to enhance nature conservation and environmental protection outcomes within the greater far north Queensland region, and promotes issues of sustainability in the context of anthropogenic climate change.
The community of Far North Queensland has shown considerable interest in urban sustainability issues in recent years. CAFNEC presented a number of forums focused on urban sustainability during 2008 that were extremely well attended, and in the last few years many local groups and initiatives have developed with a particular focus on sustainability.

We believe taking an active role in developing and supporting local urban sustainability initiatives will improve the region’s capacity to mitigate and adapt to climate change. CAFNEC views Sustainable House Day 2009 as a unique opportunity for CAFNEC to continue our involvement in the provision of education, information and advice to the Far North Queensland community about urban sustainability through showcasing examples of best practice sustainable housing.

We hope that projects such as Sustainable House Day will promote an increase in local capacity and investment in the provision of goods and services that contribute to long term economic, environmental and social sustainability in Far North Queensland, assisting local business to manage the current economic downturn. This will be especially visible through a focus on encouraging the renovation or ‘retrofitting’ of current buildings to improve resource efficiency, which it is hoped will provide support to the local construction industry which has recently seen a massive decrease in the demand for new residential and commercial buildings.
