NQ Dry Tropics is a not for profit organisations working with the community to improve land and water management practices across the Burdekin Dry Tropics Region. NQ Dry Tropics is involved in a range of awareness raising, knowledge building and on ground works projects in the areas of water quality improvement, critical habitat management, coastal protection and rehabilitation, wetland management and restoration, weed management and traditional owner engagement. NQ Dry Tropics staff are based at Townsville, Charters Towers, Bowen and Emerald and work with landholders, industry, government, traditional owners, schools, community groups and the broader community to improve land and water management practices through building understanding, ownership, knowledge, skills and opportunity for on ground action. Sustainability and environmental awareness begins at home with all of the community contributors to land and water management. Sustainable House Day is an important event which promotes this concept. NQ Dry Tropics will be promoting the importance of habitat within the home garden as critical to species, such as the endangered Black Throated Finch, and to the prevention of weed spread, through recognition and use of ‘bush friendly’ species as within the home garden. NQ Dry Tropics’ recent publication “Bush Friendly Plants of The Burdekin Dry Tropics” will be on display during Sustainable House Day.
