This house is set on 15 hectares in hilly country with a natural forest setting. Landscaping around house is designed to follow the natural setting.
Owner Build This house displays a variety of sustainable features including:
Water Harvesting
- 1 x 4000L above ground rainwater tank highest to gravity feed to bathroom and kitchen.
- Grey water recycled through filters and holding tank to adjustable drippers at fruit and native trees.
- Septic system with transpiration trench
Walls: The house is of a solid log cabin design. The internal and external walls are constructed of bluegum, bloodwood and kauri. Construction involved traditional log cabin methods of log ends slotted and slid over spigot attached to solid milled uprights. Any gaps between logs were filled with fiberglass and cement composition.
Roof: The roof is zinc alum with insulation.
Electricity Generation: This house operates on a stand alone 3/4kW solar system which consists of 10 x 75W photovoltaic modules, 100amp + 1x 500amp battery banks and a 1500W solid state inverter.
Heating and Cooling: The house is passively cooled using cross ventilation. The concrete floor creates thermal mass to keep the house warm in winter.
Water Heating: Water is heated by a wood heater that the owner designed and built. This is fired up every 24 hours using only 6-8 pieces of firewood and then stored in a stainless steel tank that is well insulated.
