The need was for a small, simple low-cost running house. A sympathetic designer and a very good builder are imperatives. Having them work together to create this easy to live in home.
New or Retro: Purpose built for energy efficiency, by builder Ted Van Lierop
Architect: Tim Winters
Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this home
Water Harvesting: 46,000L of rain water held in two tanks. Mains connected as back up. Investigating grey water management.
External walls: Galvanised iron clad – reverse brick veneer, with R2 insulation – steel frame for white ant protection
Internal walls: Brick with Gyprock cladding, aids in thermal mass to keep the home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Roof: Galvanised iron, R4 insulation, sisalation
Floor: Polished concrete for thermal mass
Window treatments: Double glazed north side, and Smart Glass on south side of house
Solar or Wind generation: Garage roof aligned for future solar panels
Heating & Cooling: Slow combustion wood heaters, we are not to need summer cooling, other than the 5 ceiling fans.
Water Heating: Solar Hotwater, gas boosted
Appliances: all appliances chosen for energy efficiency
Other: Cool Cupboard, pulling cool air from under the slab, and the hot air exhausted through a chimney – the plan for composting toilets and grey water use was not allowed in the design by the council at the time.
