Sustainable House Day Daw Park, SA

  Walk through the traditional 1950s double brick cottage into the highly energy efficient north facing extension and you'll immediately see and feel the difference between the two styles. Effective use of thermal mass, a high degree of wall and roof insulation and adjustable external shading has created an easily managed new living area that is light, bright and comfortable across all seasons.

Type: 2007 extension to existing 1956 home. Some upgrade of existing house

Architect:
Energy Architecture with the owners as designers and builders 

Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this home:

Water Harvesting Two 9 kL tanks plumbed into house plus two 2.8 kL tanks for garden and future connection to house. Buried pipe delivery to tanks from front gutters.  

External walls Existing house, double brick, newly re-rendered and painted in light colour for heat reflection. Extension, reverse brick veneer with zincalume cladding with batts and 4 mm Aircell reflective cellular foil. East and west walls incorporate an air gap for additional insulation. Linking walkway of blueboard with cement render.;  

Internal walls Gyprock with some zincalume  

Roof Extension: Colorbond with batts and 7 mm Aircell. Existing house: roof replaced, ceiling batts renewed and Aircell foil added.  

Floor Extension: slate tiles on concrete raft giving good thermal mass.  

Window treatments Plain glass with internal roller blinds.  

Solar or wind generation 1 kW photovoltaic, grid connected  

Heating & Cooling Existing house has small gas space heater. Extension has electric in-floor heating set to 20 deg C. Excellent solar passive design with removable and adjustable shading over windows and north facing walls. High level hopper windows allow good South to North airflow. No air conditioning.  

Appliances Induction cooktop, vented fridge cavity, low water and energy dish drawers and front-loading washing machine, highly insulated oven, and steam oven.
