The Sunshine Coast is the second most biodiverse region in Australia. But rapid population growth on the Sunshine Coast has put our precious local ecosystems under intense pressure.
The Sunshine Coast Environment Council Inc (SCEC) has only one purpose: To protect the Environment. SCEC is the peak environmental body with more than 50 member groups, stretching from Cooloola to Caboolture, and over 400 individual, family and business members.
Formed in 1980, SCEC has been instrumental in achieving many positive environmental outcomes for the Sunshine Coast Region. SCEC has a strong commitment to lobbying all levels of government and working with business for optimal environmental outcomes; therefore, SCEC has a strong role in community education.
SCEC has organised many local annual including the Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival, The Sunshine Coast Environment Awards (“the froggies”) and The GREENhouse forum at The Woodford Folk Festival.
SCEC also leads campaigns for positive change which include sustainable population, climate change, habitat preservation, bushland regeneration, responsible waste and water management, wildlife protection, sustainable lifestyles and many other issues.
SCEC also produces the ECOnews - a free full colour tabloid newspaper that promotes environmental awareness. We distribute over 15,000+ copies every month.
SCEC is a not-for-profit community-based volunteer organisation that depends on the support of its members, local businesses, sponsorship, fundraising and some grants.
