Sustainable House Day, North Manly, NSW

SHD by SHD ten(September 2009) (rank 13th)

Brief Description: 4 star NaTHERS rated passive solar house with innovative slab design & use of thermal mass. Flood basin, raised floor, & subfloor open to floodwater. Due to the technically challenges of the site, the local council took some persuading to give permission for building approval. However some innovative solutions were trialed, and now that the concepts have been demonstrated, council has thrown it's support behind the techniques employed.

Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this home

Water Harvesting Systems
26,000 litre rainwater tank under the garage floor. Small 240v pump supplies the house with water.

Passive Solar Features
High thermal mass – utilises water storage for thermal. Windows carefully positioned for cross ventilation and high levels of insulation used.

External Walls
Reverse brick veneer construction.

Roof
Colorbond metal with insulation.

Floor
Elevated concrete slab above floodplain level.

Window Treatments

Low E glazing used and many openable windows for ventilation.

Solar or Wind Power Generation
Grid connected PV system.

Heating & Cooling

T3 hybrid phase change heating system.

Water Heating
Linked with T3 hybrid energy system.
