SHD by SHD ten(September 2009) (rank 13th)

The Alternative Technology Association (ATA), established in 1980, is Australia’s leading, independent member-based organisation providing practical advice and information to households on sustainable living technology and practice.   Covering energy efficiency, roof-top solar panels, solar hot water, small-scale wind power, rainwater capture and greywater systems, sustainable building design and alternative transport, ATA’s advice service, magazines and guide books represent Australia’s most comprehensive suite of information resources on sustainable living.

Sanctuary: sustainable living with style magazine ( can this be hyperlinked to www.sanctuarymagazine.org.au) Sanctuary: sustainable living with style is Australia’s only magazine dedicated to sustainable house design. Each quarter, Sanctuary profiles the work of Australia’s leading environmental architects and designers, providing inspiration and practical solutions for a sustainable home, without compromising on comfort and design.

ReNew: technology for a sustainable future magazine (can this be hyperlinked to www.renew.org.au) ReNew: technology for a sustainable future is Australia’s premier magazine on practical sustainable living. Published quarterly, ReNew features the latest in sustainable building practice and renewable energy technology. It demonstrates the technology in action and provides practical information for people who would like to incorporate sustainable features into their homes.

Research and advococy into sustainable solutions for your home ATA also undertakes research and advocates in both government and industry arenas to ensure Australians have access to the ideas, information, technology and support to make their homes more sustainable.

Recent projects include:

Safe use of greywater.
ATA has been conducting research on safe greywater use in the garden including which soaps and shampoos to use and the long-term effects of greywater on soils.

Wind power for city homes. In conjunction with Sustainability Victoria, ATA has been researching the suitability of small-scale wind turbines for urban homes.

Bringing light to East Timor. For over five years, ATA has been bringing electricity to remote East Timorese communities by installing solar panels on health clinics, schools and homes.

A fair feed-in tariff.  ATA has been a leading force in calling for a national gross feed-in tariff, which would see electricity retailers pay solar homeowners a premium price for the climate-friendly power they produce.

The ATA’s International Project Group, established six years ago, has been taking small-scale renewable energy systems, along with education and training in their installation, to remote areas of East Timor.
