Belmont
It’s not about changing the world – it’s about doing what one can do. To live a lifestyle that uses far less energy and external inputs. To recognise that there are resource and ecological limits on this planet. But it’s also about creating a beautiful space, and a productive space. Things are basic, but permanent. Nothing is without function. It’s not about being self sufficient – but self reliant. Having fun and being happy does not involve shopping.
Existing Building: We have made minor modifications to a potentially energy sapping home. Now with a 1.1kw solar power system, “Solar Venti” passive heater, and plumbed water to the Laundry, and the replacement of 250w of downlights in the kitchen with just 2 compact fluorescents.
Note: Only the Garden is open for Sustainable House Day, but individual aspects in the home are available to view by request.
Unique Sustainable Elements featured in this garden:
After only 18 months, Goshen & Katrina have managed to turn an empty suburban backyard into a food producing, garden oasis. Most of the sustainable features are in place, but the garden is still very much a work in progress. Permaculture features prominently - everything is composted, chickens provide eggs and garden fertilizer. Built almost entirely of re-claimed materials and on a budget, shows how anyone can change the traditional backyard into something pleasurable AND productive.
The food production:
Not a meal goes by without something that comes from the garden, and at certain times of the year, entire meals can be gathered, just from what has been grown. Along with the veggie garden, over 25 varieties of herbs, 4 citrus, 4 berries and 5 fruit trees somehow fit into the area, along with olives, bamboo, natives, and ornamentals. Most have been in the ground for only one year, so are still very young, with many still yet to bear any fruit. A greenhouse is in the early stages, for year round growing, and the shade house provides much needed protection on the hottest days of summer.
The Plunge Pond:
The main feature point of the yard is the ‘Plunge’ Pond. An ongoing effort, designed to be a permanent and useful relief to any hot summer. A small solar panel runs the pump and water circulation through the specially designed filters, and water plants will keep the water clean and provide food for the (eventual) fish. No chemicals will be used to keep the water clean, and a cover over the deeper section makes it safer for children and reduces evaporation.
Water Harvesting Systems:
10,000L storage over 3 inconspicuous tanks – including a 5,000L bladder under the rear deck. Mix of pressure pump, and gravity feed. Overflow from tanks fill up the pond and wetland. There is a simple greywater system for irrigation of citrus trees and lawn.
