Eco Queenslander is a self-contained, craftsman built and sustainable holiday home and bed & breakfast that opened in April 2009 in the beautiful heritage town of Maryborough on the Fraser Coast.
Eco Queenslander was selected by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation to represent best practices for ecotourism in the Asia Pacific region.
The home was restored in an environmentally-friendly way and sustainable features added: main features included solar electricity; two 5,500 litre rainwater tanks using gravity feed to avoid the use of an electric pump; insulation; energy efficient lighting and appliances; fans; and insect screens. Active Waste recycling and composting are undertaken and the housework and washing are done with green detergents.
We provide information and organise workshops on green living; bicycles are provided free of charge to encourage our guests to leave their car at home when they visit the town; our promotional brochures and invoices are printed on recycled paper; and the holiday packages we offer are in association with other green businesses.
Eco Queenslander became carbon neutral in May 2010 and its carbon footprint for the period June 2009 - May 2010 was 1 tonne of carbon. For information, the average Australian household produces 14 tonnes of carbon per year (statistics from the Australian Greenhouse Office).
Our vision was to establish holiday accommodation that demonstrates that sustainable living is possible in a residential property and that we can be gentler on the environment on an every day basis without compromising our comfort. Guests are encouraged to do the same at their home!
Eco Queenslander was the Finalist in the 2010 Fraser Coast Tourism Awards for Excellence, Environmental Tourism category and is a member of The International Ecotourism Society. For more information, visit our website http://www.ecoqueenslander.com
