Transition Towns has come to Maitland with about fifty people signed up to the new group and about twenty or thirty active members.
We have completed a permablitz of a backyard and installed a great food garden which is now producing an excess of food. The food is being given to neighbours and sold at the workplace. The idea replaces a community garden and so avoid the hassel of land ownership and ongoing maintenance. I hope to write more about the back yards soon so stay tuned.
We have run several movie nights and now have an evening meeting each month to discuss projects for the group in the community. The discussions have been the initiators of several ideas which I will also expand on in detail in future reports if you would like to hear.?
Projects include
- Bike awareness day each month.
- Bike ride in association with 350.ORG for the global work party on 10/10/10
- Knitting squares for rug making at the local cafe.
- Movie night to be run in November with a dinner of locally grown food.
- A project to rid or decrease the use of plastic bags in the town
- An arts festival getting the amature art groups together in one place to highlight their talents.
These things and more are happening here and I hope to be able to write a story on each in the coming days - I hope you like them.
